Chapter 10:
CD: “If your father’s anything he's civilized in his heart.Marksmanship a gift of God, a talent--
Oh you have to practice to make it perfect,but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put the gun down when he realized that God Had Given him an unfair advantage over living things” (112).
Chapter 11:
CD: “I wanted you to see something about her--I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win but sometimes you do” (128).
Chapter 12:
CD: “It’s not necessary to tell you all you know. It’s not ladylike--in the second place, folks dont like somebody around knowing more than they do. It aggravate’s them. You're not going to change any of them by talking right, they’ve got to want to learn themselves, and when they don’t want to learn there’s nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language” (143).
