Sometimes you may be asked to synthesize your own ideas, theory, or research with those of the texts you have been assigned”(Jamieson). Introduction: (3 parts)
Body Paragraphs:(There needs to be two completer body paragraphs, make sure your topic statements match your CD's and your Topic Statements match your Thesis. TS CD (quote from text 3) CM, CM CD (quote from text 1) CM, CM CS Although...(address the other side-synthesize-conclusion) One of the major benefits of a freshman campus is that grade 9 students do not need to worry about harassment from older students. It is typical that 9th graders are targeted or hazed by older students who want to demonstrate their seniority over younger students. This hazing “can lead to fights” (Kristoff 5) and cause emotional damage to young adults. It is well known that bullying happens at high schools. Freshman hazing is not a new issue. When freshman have their own campus, students do not have to worry about a junior or senior pushing them in hallways or verbally abusing them. As a result of not having to deal with upper class bullies, many teachers noticed that “kids [had] more confidence” (Woodrow 1) in class and much more focus . When students have confidence, they want to come to school. As a result, they are more focused on their academics because they do not have to worry or have anxiety when they walk from class to class. Though bullying may still happen between grade 9 students, it is easier to catch because of the smaller number of students. Freshman campuses are indeed a benefit to the well-being of grade 9 students as they do not have to worry about over zealous juniors or seniors touting their so-called authority. Conclusion:
Freshman academies or campuses provide a definite benefit to grade 9 students. While the opposition may state that these campuses divide a high school or limit the high school experience, this is definitely not the case. There are several examples of freshman campuses where bullying and discipline rates were cut dramatically. As a result, failure and dropout rates also dropped. These are definite benefits and clearly outweigh any negative arguments against the freshman campus. It is clear that more freshman campuses should be implemented throughout Washington. Jamieson, Sandra. "Resources for Writers: Synthesis Writing." Resources for Writers: Synthesis Writing. Drew University, 1999. Web. 24 Feb. 2014. Tomorrow, Friday 9/20 we start our first unit on Creative writing. The purpose of Creative writing is to help students practice their writing by choosing their own genre of writing and to improve their word choice.
Each week after our vocabulary test, students are required to type 250 words in whatever genre they wish. It can be fiction or non-fiction but it must be in a narrative style without any harvested text to support ideas. Each Friday, a word count will be document for 20 points. If the 250 words are not accomplished the student has the weekend to make up the words lost. However, it is your responsibility to come up to me and show me the words gained so I can improve your weekly score. If words not made up the score stands or reverts to a zero. DUE DATE: Friday, October 11th After 4 weekly entries are accomplished, students will turn in their completed document to TURNITIN.doc. AT this time it will be read and given a formal grade of (100 points). Based on the following criteria: 1. 25% word count 2. 25 % word choice* extra credit awarded if SAT vocabulary words are used and identified in red text. 3. 25% creativity and originality 4. 25% conventions: spelling, grammar, dialog if needed, punctuation. Once the session is completed and we move to Session #2 students may continue with the same story line or begin a new one.
T Welcome to Mount Si High School and 9th Grade Language Arts!
Wednesday, 9/4/2019 Greetings Students! I am writing a letter to explain to you why I will not be starting school until Wednesday,9/18/2019. I recently had knee surgery and needed a six week recovery time period. I will be evaluating and grading all work that you do in my absence. It is really important that you save all of your assignments, labeled with the “Title of the Assignment” on each document to be placed in your LA 9 folders.I can access these from home and get to know you before I arrive. Please put forth your best effort. Most importantly, treat your substitute with the respect he deserves! Your first assignment is a Google Slide Presentation. You will work on these over a one week period. Remember this is a visual project, I would like each slide about yourself labeled, but not with extensive text. This is a speaking and listening activity versus a writing assignment. I created one about me, that your substitute will show you and that can give you some ideas to work from. Please read the assignment that is attached, carefully, so you meet the required criteria. There will be other assignments that your substitute will assign to you the second week surrounding poetry analysis and writing. Please listen and give your best effort with each assignment so I can get a baseline of where you are at with your writing. You are graded based on the progress you make with your own writing, not compared to another student’s writing. The key is to try with your best effort and we will diligently, together strive to create significant growth and improvement with your writing and analysis skills. I am excited to meet you and we will have a great year together! It is so exciting to be part of a brand new building with so many high tech features and diversified learning centers. Have a productive and positive first 10 days and I look forward to seeing you on 9/18/2019. Sincerely, Mrs. Canady,NBCT |
