Okay this week we are Grading!
- You are responsible for a 2 chunk paragraph on a character.
- This can be from your novel you read OR one of the famous Civil Rights poems listed on this document with direct links.
- You will need turn in your completed assignment into: TURNITIN.com for [20 points in the Writing Category] and the assignment will be called “Lesson for 4/6-4/10 and its Graded”
- Please label your two chunk:

- Do Vocabulary Assignment (post after paragraph same page) 10 points.

Reading Skill: Students will actively read one of two choices:
- Previous American Voices Personal Selection Novel Character OR
- One of the following Civil Right Poems and character and identify key elements of characterization talked about within:
- Direct presentation: a character’s thoughts and feelings are described by the author, the narrator or the other characters.
- Indirect presentation: a character's thoughts and feelings are revealed by their actions and speech.
- Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work.
- Round characters are complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader.
- Static characters do not change over the course of the story
- Dynamic characters undergo some great transformation from the conflict that s/he must overcome.
- External conflict is a problem outside of the protagonist's control.
- Internal conflict is a problem that exists within the characters themselves.
Writing Skill: Write a 2 Chunk response that analyzes the growth of a character over the course of a story.
Tips for Writing a 2 Chunk Response
- Focus on refining your CD usage. Make sure your CD is smoothly embedded or has enhancing & informational context, edited down, properly cited and would seem important or meaningful to someone who had never read the source material.
- CDs should obviously give some insight into how a character thinks or feels.
- Practice writing bits of CM that consistently shows nuanced, sophisticated understanding of the character.
Language Skills: Identify 5 words from the text you selected that seem important, sophisticated or you had to look up and write an original sentence using each one.
Tips for increasing your Language skills
- Identify words that you do not know in a text.
- Look up and write down the definitions of words you do not know.
- Look up examples of that word in other sentences. There are several online tools for this...like Words in a Sentence.com.
- Write a sentence using the word.
- You can practice vocabulary at this link too: vocabtest.com.
Grammar & Conventions Skills: Students will review the mini lessons on comma usage and the comma cheat sheet then write 5 sentences using commas.
