Tips for using commas
- Use the Introducer comma when providing context of when a quote/CD was said. Example: When describing Atticus, Scout admits that she and Jem “found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment” (Lee 6).
- Use the Introducer and Interrupter comma in your CM to add more sophisticated analysis of the CD. Example: Clearly, the children only see their father, who is a widower, as a distant figure that holds no significant role in their daily lives or minds. However, this emotional distance does not seem to align with Scout’s confession that Atticus seemed to invest quality time and attention, reading and playing, on both of them. It is not uncommon for children to misconceive, or even completely ignore, the love and affection they receive from their parents.
